Green-IT strategy, governance & maturity framework

At ADJUGO we have developed a comprehensive methodology that allows us to provide consultancy and assessment services to companies that are considering greening their IT environment, which is called the Green-IT Strategy & Governance and Maturity Framework.

The Framework was inspired by CobiT, Val IT and ITILv3, and incorporates the EU (ISPRA) data center Code of Conduct (CoC) best practices and measurements for which ADJUGO is an official endorser. It is periodically updated to reflect the latest developments in Green-IT standards, trends, resolutions and regulations. Finally, environmental regulations are in force and questions start to come from the Board, the CEO and the CFO, putting more pressure on the IT department and the CIO. Our Green-IT Strategy & Governance Framework permits the CIO to show, measure and control its contribution to the organization's commitments to reducing ICT waste, energy consumption, CO2 footprint and last but not least to reduce costs. ADJUGO is vendor independent and hence, we are not biased when drafting our recommendations.

The key advantages of our approach are:

  • We look at Green-IT from a pure strategy and governance perspective; maximizing return for the stakeholders and managing risks
  • We are fully in line with standards and best practices like the ones recommended by Green Grid and the European Commission
  • We offer a step by step approach meaning that the costs incurred for green initiatives remain under control
  • We put a Green leverage on the IT Governance methodologies and processes: CobiT, Val IT and ITILv3
  • We minimize risk by anticipating upcoming laws and regulations
  • We offer a unique marketing opportunity around the "Green-IT Strategy & Governance Certified by ADJUGO"

The full approach comprises 4 consecutive phases: Assess, Plan, Implement and Sustain. In order to implement a comprehensive approach, actions are to be taken on three complementary levels: Process, Performance (measurement) and People. The methodology comprises the activities mentioned below. These activities have been combined into various Green-IT Services.

Processes

  • Perform Green-IT Quick scan
Performing a Green-IT Quick scan provides insight in the major areas of improvement in terms of Green-IT Strategy & Governance. As such, it provides an indication as to the maturity level regarding Green-IT. The Green-IT Quick scan can be followed by a more detailed audit. This allows for focusing in more detail on the areas of improvement that were detected during the Quick scan.
  • Definition of Green-IT Roadmap
After having defined the recommendations, a Green-IT Roadmap is drafted. In this roadmap, the recommendations are converted to actions points which are prioritized, correlated and mapped out in a calendar. In the Green-IT Roadmap, it is clear what these objectives are and how these can be reached in terms of finance, human resources, technology etc.
  • Implementation / adapt processes
The activities listed in the Green-IT Roadmap are being executed, taking into account the relative priority, contribution to the ultimate objectives, the costs and the human and technological impact. Implementation is to be done on a strategic (IT Governance), tactic (IT management processes) and operational level (data center operations).
  • Periodic (re-) assessment
Periodic (re-)assessments are performed to monitor progress of the Green-IT Roadmap implementation as well as the result thereof; the latter by means of measuring the improvement of the kpi's.

Performance

  • Definition and implementation of green key performance indicators (kpi's)
Based on the Green-IT Roadmap, green key performance indicators are defined and implemented in order to be able to monitor progress over time. These kpi's can be derived from the strategic, tactic and operational level. The green kpi's can be compiled in one single framework like a balanced scorecard.
  • Select and implement monitoring tools
After the kpi's have been defined, the supporting tools have to be investigated. Supporting tools are a key enabler to ensure continuous quality reporting and sustainable measurement.
  • Periodic reporting
The measurement outcomes may serve as input for Intranet publications or formal reports like the Annual Report or the Corporate Social Responsibility Report.

People

  • Setup of awareness and/or training program
In order to successfully achieve the objectives, set in the Green-IT Roadmap, different awareness and training sessions are organized. Awareness and commitment of the employees is a key success factor for making Green-IT a success.
  • Sustainable sponsorship
Creating awareness among employees is not a one-off. Ensuring sustainable sponsorship requires continuous activities to keep everyone motivated to take an active stance to greening the environment.
